Triennale Design Museum - Tuesday, June 7th, 2011
On June 7th we visited the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and saw the exhibit called “Dream Factory”. The exhibit focused on the success of small Italian design companies producing big, iconic pieces. The companies may not be big enough to have a factory, but they produce a lot of ideas.
The exhibit consisted of a lot of famous chairs. My favourite chair was the Peacock Chair by New York City designer Dror Benshetrit and Italian manufacturer Cappellini. I encountered this chair a year and a half ago when researching design companies in New York city. It instantly grabbed my attention. I love the soft look, rich colours and innovative use of materials. It fits my style perfectly. I was thrilled to see it in the exhibit.
The Peacock Chair is an incredible beautiful and innovative peice. It is created out of three sheets of felt and a minimal metal frame. Its clever design and use of materials requires no sewing or upholstery. The folds of the felt are woven tightly to form a structured yet very comfortable lounge chair.
Dror Benshetrit started his design studio, Studio Dror, in 2002 in New York City. He specializes in innovative design projects, encompassing product design, architecture projects, interior design and art direction. His perception of the world has been enriched by travels across Europe and multi-cultural experiences including his studies at the Eindhoven Design Academy in Holland. Dror has also worked with Alessi, Bentley, Boffi, Bombay Sapphire, Kiehl’s, Levi’s, Material ConneXion, Maya Romanoff, Marithé + François Girbaud, Puma, Rosenthal, Skins Footwear, Yigal Azrouël, Shvo, Swarovski, and Target.

Cappellini is a well established, Italian, furniture manufacturer. The company was started by Enrico Cappellini in 1946 as a small workshop in Carugo, Italy. In 1960, their contemporary furniture construction started. Then in 1977, Giulio Cappellini started taking the company in more of a brand direction, making it what it is today. Cappellini prides itself on have a well balanced collection, with no real style. They have a vast range of colours, finishes, materials and typologies. They simply produce what they think is really innovative.
I hope you like the chair as much as I do.
