On June 16th, we visited La Biennale di Venezia. The Biennale this year was named Illuminations. The morning was at the Gardini and the afternoon was at the Arsenale. Both locations were gorgeous - the Gardini was filled with Pavillions that each housed a different nation. There was so much to see in just the morning, and then even more in the afternoon. You would definintely need a whole week to see all of the exhibits!
There were so many art pieces that stood out in my mind but one in particular is the photography by Lateefa Bint Maktoum.
Lateefa Bint Maktoum is the founder and director of Tashkeel, a public studio providing specialist facilities for artists and designers living and working in the UAE. She graduated from Zayed University, Latifa College in 2007 with a Bachelors Degree in Visual Arts and has been an exhibiting artist since 2004. She has curated a number of exhibitions, and her artwork has been celebrated nationally and internationally.
When explaining her work she says: "I am intrigued by the world of thoughts and emotions, especially my own. I have come to realize that I have used my artwork as a form of catharsis and that through it I am able to express feelings I could never put into words. Even though I use other people as my models, I utilize them as a vehicle to convey my own personal emotions and messages, even though I recognize that each viewer will have their own interpretation of what they see"
The picture below is a great example of the historical interior of most of the large buildings housing the art at the Arsenale location of the Biennale.
Here are the other photographs by Lateefa that were shown at the Biennale - Arsenale.
