Bruno Munari |
On May 31st we visited ISIA, the oldest school of industrial design in Italy. While there we heard a lecture by Veronica Bogoa. She was telling us about the teachings of Bruno Munari. She spoke of his ideas on contemporary design, and the techniques to use while designing in order to create attention grabbing designs.
OPPOSITE – doing the opposite of what is expected
REPETITION – repeating patterns, shapes, objects, colours
UNUSAL MATERIAL – using materials in new and unconventional ways
UNUSAL PLACES – taking things out of their natural surrounding and putting them in unexpected places
UNUSUAL COLOUR – changing the colour of something to one that isn’t normally used
FUSION – combining two or more objects to make a new one
UNUSUAL DIMENSION – scaling things bigger or smaller, stretching or compressing the object
SIMILAR – making an object that has one function, look like an object with a similar function
WEIGHT – making something appear heavier or lighter than it actually is
REALATIONS – using two or more of these techniques at once

After hearing about these ideas and seeing the examples Veronica had found, these concepts really made sense to me. I am excited to start seeing them around Italy.
