FLOS Showroom, Milan - June 11th
Since their string of successful Castiglioni-designed lamps in the 60's, FLOS has developed a reputation as one of the leaders in innovative Italian lighting design. Their two product lines, architectural and decorative, span a wide range of lighting systems, suitable for both personal and professional environments. Like any other company, FLOS has had to adapt their product lines to changes in markets and technology. Their particular evolution strategy, however, proves to be a unique in the context of similar organizations.
Soft-Architecture is a new line of wall and ceiling lighting systems featuring products that embed fixtures directly into architectural structures. The light and its housing become decoration literally intwined into its environment, effectively combining their two product categories. Instead of searching for external sources of innovation, the company used a self-referential approach to evalute and retool their existing techniques. Inventing an entirely new product type through the reapplication of current products is a perfect example of how Italian design finds ways to refreshen and modernize itself, perpertuating its distintive characteristics without compromise.
