"Judith Slaying Holofernes" By Artemisia Gentileschi.
This painting is one of my favourite renaissance paintings and it was a nice surprise to find it in Florence's Uffizi Gallery. Artemisia is not only an extremely talented painter, who was highly influenced by Caravaggio, she is also one of the few female painters of her time and the first to be accepted in the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence.
The story of Artemisia is part of the reason why I find her work so interesting and evocative. In the male-dominated world of pre-renaissance art, you can see her artistic struggle to gain recognition as a female. Her success was not without many obstacles which in turn developed her paintings into meaningful works that connect the artist with the viewer.
Artemisia began her painting career very young, as she was taught by her father, Orazio Gentileschi, alongside her brothers. She had a noticeably different style from her brothers as well as her father as she painted very naturalistically. At only seventeen, she completed her first painting, “Susanna and the Elders” (1610), which is a dramatic story of blackmail and treachery towards a young woman.

Shortly after finishing the painting Artemisia found herself in a situation similar to that of Susanna. She was studying under a friend of her fathers, Agostino Tassi, when he raped her. The scandalous event lead to a seven month trial where Artemisia was tortured both psychologically and physically (with thumbscrews) to ensure that she was being truthful.
These traumatic events in Artemisia’s life lead her to paint the violent depiction of “Judith Beheading Holofernes” (1612 -1613), where Judith is seen as a powerful heroin. Shortly after, she painted “Judith and her Maidservant” (1613 – 1614), which depicts Judith carrying the head of Holofernes.

The traumatic struggles in Artemisia's life can be seen through her powerful subject matter. Because of this, I've always found her to be one of the most interesting renaissance painters and I thought I would share a little bit of her biography and works.
