A Brief of Venice International University

Venice International University, Venice - Monday, June 13th

The island San Servolo was a monastery, military hospital, and later on a psychiatric hospital which was then abandoned in 1987. In 1995 however, the buildings and island underwent a restoration that transformed into a place with a park, sports grounds, cafeteria, bar and has several works of contemporary art throughout the complex, which is now recognized as Venice International University (VIU).

VIU is an institution offering higher education and a research center on the island of San Servolo, with the university focusing their studies on mainly innovation, environmental sustainability and cultural heritage. The establishment first started off as a joint venture between two local universities (Ca’Foscari and Iuav) and has since then grown to include a total of 15 members of both Italian and international communities, thus creating a network hub and place for professors, researchers and students from around the world.

"To the information society in which we live, we must respond with an education society, and to the dazzling power of technical instruments, we must respond with a renewed awareness of the superiority of intelligence and conscience."  Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, San Servolo, Venice, June 7, 1997, Opening Day Ceremony
