What started as a small Italian furniture company producing basic wooden furniture in dark colours, Lago, which has only recently become a publicly listed company in 2006, has exhibited enormous growth.

In 2004, the company had 50 people employed and had made $4 million in sales. Presently, the company employs 180 workers and $35 million in sales.

One of the reasons of Lago’s great success in recent years is attributed to the young owner, Daniele Lago, who adopted Toyota’s Production system with its inherent advantages of eliminating waste and integrating just-in-time logistics. The company which had a manufacturing to idle ratio of 1:1500 before the transition is now operating at 1:700 and a future projected goal of 1:300. Toyota plants however can operate at 1:10.

Now with their LagoStudio program, Lago welcomes young designers who are able to take part in Lago’s design processes in their products and will be given opportunities to have their ideas and concepts realized as an actual product sold by the company chain.

The purchase of multifunctional manufacturing machines help speed the process of manufacturing the furniture, allowing entire sections of furniture to be produced with a single pass through.

Lago’s most popular product 36e8 shelf can be combined and arranged in different ways and is also available in a wide assortment of colours.
