Italian neorealism (Italian: Neorealismo) is a style of film characterized by stories set amongst the poor and working class, filmed on lcation, frequently using nonprofessional actors. Italian neorealist films mostly contend with the difficult economic and moral conditions of post-World War II Italy, reflecting the changes in the Italian psyche and the conditions of everyday life: poverty and desperation.

  1. Italian neorealism is certainly not just a style of film! Italian authors such as Alberto Moravia wrote extensively on these premises, exploring themes such as existentialism and social alienation, almost always set in post-war working classes. Quite a few movies of the italian neorealist genre are adapted from his novels.
