Italian Design and Technology

FLOS lighting, Milan - Saturday, June 11

Soft Architecture: Wallpiercing

"Technology is used to realize artistic visions. For Italians, technology lives within design, not the other way around."

During the visit to FLOS lighting showroom, one of the reoccurring concepts on this trip was brought up. An characteristic of traditional Italian design is the use of low to medium technology, flourishing in industries such as furniture and fashion. Italian designers do not follow market trends, instead focus on the aesthetic and artistic dimensions of the product. As a result, products becomes more than just industrial goods, but cultural goods. As technology continues to evolve globally at rapid speeds, Italians are embracing the changes. FLOS is a great example of how a harmonious balance is achieved in Italian design between artistic expression and innovations in technologies.
