Breaking Tradition

Foscarini Headquaters, Venice - Wednesday, June 15th

Foscarini started off as a traditional contract-based glass blowing company. The transition of the company to turn away from just solely glass occurred after receiving several “problematic” design proposals of lights that could be done in glass, but not in a way which would be cost effective or practical.

The Foscarini company however was and still is a company that welcomes challenges and took to developing these problematic projects by exploring options in manufacturing by experimenting with mostly different materials.

One such product that had undergone this project include the Havana floor lamp by Jozeph Forakis that was originally proposed to be made with a single piece of blown glass but was then developed and made in plastic. The change made the product much more practical and cost effective.

Another project that required much development and was resolved after the exploration of different materials is the Cobache Floor lamp proposed by Patricia Urquiola whose inspiration came from the bracelet on her hand. An item whose main section was projected to be made of glass globes and a steel frame is now made entirely in plastic, giving it excellent lighting quality with its transparent plastic sections.

Currently, Foscarini no longer does any manufacturing, but instead outsources all their manufacturing to local factories. This has allowed Foscarini to be very flexible with its production of its products.
